2009 Chevrolet Cruze

The new sedan Chevrolet Cruze raises the bar for the attractive design, build quality and performance improvement in Europe, the value of the segment compact.

Backed by a high level of EuroNCAP crash safety rating and a new line of powertrain, Chevrolet Cruze also announces the introduction of a new design language for Chevrolet.

"Chevrolet has always upheld the value and the Cruze offers that promise like never before," said Wayne Brannon, GM Europe Vice President, Chevrolet. "It redefines value with its design, quality materials and great style inside and out."

Developed to meet European tastes in the design and performance of the chassis, Chevrolet Cruze for sale in March and will spearhead the launch of a new series of products that share their design and quality. I simply believe that the introduction of the Chevrolet Cruze has "moved the targets" for products that seek to compete successfully in its segment.

Exterior design

The multi-national design team, based in Korea, with input from colleagues in Germany, the United States and Australia, is responsible for delivering a new compact notchback sedan to re-boost the Chevrolet brand.

"Our goal is to be revolutionary, not evolutionary," says Taewan Kim, Vice President of GM Design Center in Korea DAT. Inside and out, the team has developed a new design language for Chevrolet, the introduction of new visual elements at the same time to express traditional design firm Chevy signals in new ways.

An arched roof, extending from the steeply raked windshield to the rear pillars thin is the definition of the characteristic external Chevrolet Cruze. Combined with a relatively short rear deck, bringing four-door coupé-like hopes that this market segment for the first time.

Wider and longer than its predecessor, the Chevrolet Cruze has a well-planted, near the ground with its wheels located at the outer edges of the bodywork stretched noted. One of the distinctive concave shoulder line flows along the sides of the vehicle in the rear deck lid and it will become a new design for the signature Chevy function. The visual appearance of luxury is enhanced by clean, uncluttered free body moldings or trim.

The signature dual-port grille takes gold Chevy bowtie with a new air of self confidence. Characteristically flanked by headlamp housing, with effect jewel "detailing until sweeping, like arrows, to a point on the front fenders. Includes built-style rear tail light, with each casting in two circles, echoing a traditional double lumen Chevy style plea.

The svelto is supported by a competitive 0.31 drag coefficient and a quality construction with attention to detail typical products costing much more. A best-in-class fit and finish of the panel to close gaps and lines contribute to the quality, 'hewn from solid appearance.

"This is a car with a high degree of luxury and a great position," added Kim Taewan. "We think it stands out among its competitors."

Interior Design and Features

Convey a warm sport, the five seat cabin is characterized by a harmonious, flowing lines and the application of grain, soft to the touch. This is a high quality performance that transcends the value of the compact segment.

Class leading features include downloading of adjustment panels, with exceptionally short gap tolerances, and generous rear passenger leg, head and shoulders, despite the signing Chevrolet Cruze slope of the roof.

The central theme interior design is a modern expression of traditional style Chevy cue - the signature "double deck" provision of the Corvette, an ornament designed for the driver and passengers closer to a shared experience. On each side of the fascia, is a choice of color-grained vinyl or fabric panels, which are complemented by matching inserts in the seats and door trims.

The central point of the "dual cockpit" symmetry is a perfectly integrated center stack, housing and infotainment shows and air conditioning controls. It is mounted at an angle and has a free flowing form that eliminates the traditional straight lines and "framing" of the panels.

Three-dimensional mathematical model was used in the design of the main instrument cluster. The analog is marked with LED backlighting for clear, crisp illumination in white and blue ice.

Compared with the seats of its predecessor, the main improvements for the Chevrolet Cruze is the use of a wire mesh construction to distribute the weight more evenly, a foam stronger and deeper for the strengthening of the cushions and seats, front and rear.

The upholstery fabric includes high-quality French seam stitching delivers excellent durability and eliminates the possibility of a "stretched-couture appearance in time. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, an option for the upper specification LT.

The range of flat / posterior adjustment of the front seats has been extended by approximately 50 mm, giving more time for travel in the value of the compact segment.

Manual air conditioning is an option for the base LS and standard variants, while the dual zone automatic climate control is standard with the specification LT. An odor and particle filtration system that cleans the air entering the cabin is standard across the range, such as a heated rear screen.

An AM / FM / CD audio, digital signage with RDS, a MP3 playback and two-color graphical display, is the standard for the base and LS versions. The LT adds an in-dash six CD auto-changer and a USB connector for the iPod in the center console. A DVD-based navigation system is offered in all specifications and includes a 7-inch screen color map, a segment of "first" for Chevrolet.

Structure and security systems

Chevrolet Cruze in the body structure is one of the stiffest in its class, with a torsional rigidity 140% greater than that of its predecessor. This strong, strong structure is the key to noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), as well as providing a good crash safety and optimum driving performance and handling properties.

The car has been designed in cooperation in GM facilities in Germany, the United States, Australia and Korea. "In key areas, such as body structure, suspension, safety and electrical systems are based on GM" best practices "throughout the world," says Peter Mertens, GM's Global Vehicle Line Executive compact cars.

The nucleus is a structure of unitary construction made from steel girders, and box pressed sections, with a torsional stiffness of 17.66 kNm / degree of deflection. Around 65% of the structure consists of high-strength steels (HSS), approximately 50% more than its predecessor. Approximately 30% of welds are also used throughout the structure.

Efficient load maximum protection for occupants in the event of an impact in virtually any direction. Long beams and improvements on the windowsill, BA-pillars and columns, using high-strength steels and processing tailored blank, all contribute to the excellent crashworthiness of the vehicle.

The energy absorbing front and rear crumple zones are designed strain as efficiently as possible in order to maintain the integrity of the cabin, which is protected by a reinforced safety cage with tubular section members that frame the door and support the roof vents. The combination of a single piece of hand structure and ultra-high strength steel beams of the door also provides effective protection from side impact.

At low speeds of up to 4 km / h. The front and rear bumper skins are designed to absorb light of the impact energy, helping to minimize damage to bodywork.

In addition to minimize noise and vibration, it also provides a rigid structure to isolate residual power, road and wind noise, even the quietest cabin comfort. Chevrolet Cruze has reached the interior noise and wind noise ratings that are both among the best in its class of compact sedans in the segment of value.

Seat belts are fitted to three points for all five seating positions. Driver and passenger front airbags, side roof rail curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and a collapsible pedal assembly are fitted as standard. Active safety measures include anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control (TCS) and optional electronic stability control (ESC).

Powertrain

The new line of petrol and diesel is composed of 1.6 and 1.8 liter, all aluminum, gasoline engines and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel unit with 16 valves.

Both gasoline engines feature variable valve timing, both at entry and exhaust parts. The 1.6 liters engine develops 113 kW hp/83 maximum power at 6400 rpm and maximum torque of 153 Nm at 4200 rpm.

Version 1.8 liters offers even more responsive performance, with 141 hp/104 kW at 6200 rpm and maximum torque of 176 Nm at 3800 rpm, including 85% from 2000 rpm to 6300 rpm. In terms of power per liter, this engine is one of the most efficient on the market.

With manual transmissions, these engines offer zero to 100 km / h acceleration in 12.5 and 10.0 seconds respectively, and fuel consumption over the combined cycle of 6.7 and 6.8 l/100 km.

The new, 16-valve 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 kW hp/110 adds power with even greater frugality. Impressive fuel economy - 5.6 l/100 km in the combined cycle - offers a range of driving over 1000 km. It is equipped with a maintenance-free exhaust particulate filter.

The common rail injection manifold design includes variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). With strong torque of 320 Nm from just 2000 rpm, this engine allows zero to 100 km / h acceleration in 10.0 seconds, and even more impressive performance in the arts, with 80-120 km / h in fifth up in 12.5 seconds. They were joined later in the year by a 125 kW version hp/92.

The engine of 1.6 liters is equipped as standard for the base and LS variants, 1.8 liters, while the standard is optional for the LT and LS. Both are available with a five-speed gearbox or a manual six-speed automatic transmission, a segment of "first" for Chevrolet.

The 2.0-liter turbo diesel variants LT is equipped with only 125 kW version hp/92 will be offered for the base and LS. Both engines are available only with manual transmission.

For all engine applications, a universal front sub-frame, which carries the engine and transmission, is screwed into place by four rubber bushings. This "isolation" assembly to help reduce transmission of engine vibration and road noise in the cabin.

Suspension, brakes, steering

Chevrolet Cruze to the suspension, braking and steering systems have been developed on the roads of Europe to meet European driving tastes. Achieving a balance between agility and comfort, Chevrolet Cruze gives the driver a high degree of "connectivity" and offers a relaxed and refined ride character.

Compared to its predecessor, the Chevrolet Cruze enjoys a greater "footprint" that contributes to more stable handling. The front track is increased to 1544 mm (up to 64 mm) and the back of the track 1558 mm (up to 78 mm), while the 2685 mm wheelbase is 85 mm longer. The largest proportional increase in the track by itself allow for better road holding ability.

Front suspension is McPherson strut with side load compensation to reduce sliding friction. The front sub-frame provides a strong mounting location for the board to a smaller weapon. Hydraulic Bearings - a feature common in more expensive vehicles - are used to a greater degree of isolation and a more controlled ride absorption of the road input loads.

At the rear, an advanced composite handle (torsion beam) using the design. In addition to the wheel camber to allow for consistent, this suspension system offers weight and space savings that are of value for a compact car segment.

The beam, and double-walled U-shaped in profile, is attached to the trailing links through a patent, 'magnetic arc "welding process. This technology allows the production of the beam thickness and the angles of attachment to be different depending on the motor vehicle and of different weights, to facilitate the adjustment of the rate of roll and roll steer characteristics.

Disc brakes, ventilated at the front and solid at the back, are all equipped.

An all-wheel Anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control (TCS) and distribution of electronic braking force (EBD), which controls the braking front to back, are fitted as standard (EU countries + 2).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), also standard (EU countries + 2), using both the ABS and TCS functions smoothly to counteract excessive euphoria or misjudgments by the driver. It is also useful to help the driver maintain control during an emergency avoidance maneuver.

The rack-and-pinion steering is power assisted hydraulic action quickly and with less than three turns of the wheel lock to lock necessary.
